Fall is in full swing and it’s been a jam packed season already. There are so many shows and events happening in Vancouver. Over the last few weeks, I’ve attended some fantastic press previews. You may have caught some of the behind the scenes on my insta stories including this photo above, sipping champagne and taking a peek at the Louis Vuitton Exhibit at the Rosewood Hotel Vancouver.
It’s a great time of year to get out and about and enjoy our city. I’ve rounded up some of the best things I’ve experience in Vancouver this month, and what you should check out too.
Cindy Sherman is the latest exhibit at the Vancouver Art Gallery, in collaboration with London’s National Portrait Gallery. This critically acclaimed retrospective of more than 170 works includes many rarely seen images. Cindy Sherman is considered one of the most influential artists of her generation. Using make up, costumes, props and prosthetics, Cindy transforms herself into character. Her conceptual approach to photography based art was first developed in the 1970’s during her time in New York, and Cindy continues to create new works today.
We were invited to preview the exhibition, which runs until 8 March 2020. We toured the retrospective with Magda Keaney, Senior Curator of Photographs at The National Portrait Gallery, learning more about the incredible art work and stories behind the photos. In her latest series, fashion house Chanel let Cindy Sherman go through the Haute Couture collection and choose pieces to shoot. The final images feature a paired down look shot on Icelandic scenes in exquisite haute couture garments.
If you are a bride to be, Creme de la Creme is a wonderful event to attend. Ahead of the annual bridal show, we spent a morning previewing what the team from Countdown Events has in store for their 2019 showcase. Taking place on Sunday, 17 November at the Fairmont Vancouver Hotel, Crème de la Crème features the top wedding vendors including florals, catering, décor and fashion. The event includes a bridal runway show of couture gowns, along with lavish displays by the best in the bridal business. Just look at the Jimmy Choo shoe with all this sparkle. Now that’s a wedding shoe!
I always love watching a Cirque de Soleil show, and LUZIA did not disappoint. Located under the big top in downtown Vancouver, LUZIA takes you on an imaginary journey through Mexico. Water plays a big part in the production, where light (‘luz’ in Spanish) is combined with the spirit and rain (‘lluvia’). This is woven through the entire performance, and is the first time Cirque du Soleil has a water show touring. The visuals from LUZIA are breathtaking. Vibrant sets combined with incredible acrobatic performances will transport you to a dreamy, surreal world.
The show runs in Vancouver until 29 December 2019.
