WHO: Claudia Da Ponte
WHAT: Fashion Stylist/Costume Designer
WHERE: Vancouver, B.C.
Did you always know you wanted to work in the fashion industry?
My pre-school teacher used to get annoyed with me because I never wanted to do any activities except play with the dolls and their clothes. When I discovered what a fashion stylist was when I was 15, I decided that was what I wanted to do, and here I am. I like to joke that I am a professional Barbie doll dresser!
What was your best learning experience early in your career?
That you can never have too many options on hand!! It’s always better to have too many choices than not enough. You have to be ready to anticipate anything – from measurements being off, to people’s own insecurities and perceptions of themselves, especially when you’re dressing personalities.
As one of Vancouver’s top fashion stylists, you’ve worked with many notable people. Who has been your favorite person to dress so far?
Lauren Holly. I had the pleasure of working with her recently when I was the costume designer on the film ‘The Town That Came A’Courtin’. I always really enjoy dressing people in items that they look amazing in but wouldn’t think to put themselves in.
What is your favourite type of project to work on?
Fashion editorials will always have my heart! I get to be super creative and have more freedom than I usually get with other jobs. Costume design is right behind it though.
What has been the most memorable experience from styling?
It is hard to choose just one! I have had so many amazing experiences through styling. From working on cover editorials, to dressing Christian Slater on “Way Of The Wicked”, to being apart of the wardrobe team for Britney Spears & Celine Dion concert tours in Vancouver. I am blessed to have some fantastic clients and I’ve had the opportunity to work with some great people. I’ve also been able to attend really cool industry events like fashion weeks, store openings, runway shows and so much more!
What are your favourite Vancouver stores to shop at for your clients?
The Hudson’s Bay Co, Holt Renfrew, Vous Valet, Jeweliette
What are your must have pieces for the Fall season?
Coats, boots & stockings.
For boots: A sexy pair with a heel – my favourite are by Christian Louboutin
And a practical walking boot – I wear my Michael Kors whenever I’m on the go
For coats: I love my vintage leopard coat from 69 Vintage in Toronto
Who is your dream client?
What advice would you give to someone wanting to be a fashion stylist?
You really have to love it! Styling is a lot of hard work with many late nights & early mornings. Network and volunteer as much as you can!!
