Coats to Fall For

pink-coat-mainA great coat can make an outfit. Colours and fabrics change every season, but there a few key silhouttes that will never go out of style. Since I teach a Fashion Elements course, I’ve highlighted a few of the key elements on my favourite timeless coat silhouette. Be it The Trench Coat, The Peacoat Coat, or The Cocoon Coat, they’re all classic shapes you’ll never regret having in your wardrobe.

trench-coatsThe classic trench is a wardrobe staple. This coat has a rich history dating back to 1800, with most of the credit going to Burberry, who was the first brand to use waterproof gabardine fabric. Created for the British Army, they became popular in fashion after the war in the 20’s with many movie stars wearing trench coats in Hollywood hits. Think Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca.

The trench is perfect Fall coat, especially in a rainy city like Vancouver. The double breasted raincoat features epaulet, storm flaps and self belts around the waist and cuff. Traditionally you tie a trench coat belt, not through the buckle.pea-coatWhen the Fall air is too crisp for comfort, a peacoat is ideal. This coat was traditionally worn by Dutch sailors, that’s why a classic pea coat is navy and features gold buttons with anchors. This double breasted wool coat is hip length so it’s perfect to wear over a party dress this Holiday season.pink-coat

I’m a sucker for everything soft pink. The pink cocoon coat I’m wearing in the photo above is a favourite. A departure from the regular black coat, pink feel like a light and delightful change. It also happens to be one of the colour of the year, Rose Quartz. Along with Serenity Blue. Oh I think I need a blue coat too…
the-duster

Not quite to the ground, but close! The Duster gets its name from the overcoat you would wear over your outfit to protect it from dust when riding in a car, that didn’t have a roof. This coat is traditionally in a light weight fabric and covers most of your outfit. This is a popular trend this season so it can be found in a many different colours and fabrics.
