One of my favourite things to do over the Christmas Holidays is to curl up fireside with a good book. Between all the family visits, festive food and excitement, it’s wonderful to have quiet time with an enjoyable read. Every year I make sure I bring a few books home, and try to finish at least one! Here are three of my favourite books from this year that will be perfect to read over the Holidays.
City of Girls
I adore this book. It was my favourite fictional reads this year. City of Girls is written by Elizabeth Gilbert, who you will know from her memoir Eat, Pray, Love, among other great books. It’s a unique and beautifully written love story, set in New York City in the 1940s. Nineteen year old Vivian Morris has left Vassar college to live with her Aunt Peg in the city, who owns rundown but beloved theatre, Lily Playhouse. Vivian is introduced to a wonderful array of colourful characters and fun loving showgirls. She knows how to sew, and becomes part of the Lily Playhouse family making costumes for all the shows. A delightful tale unfolds, until there’s a twist, and the war breaks out.
The story unfolds from the prospective of a now eighty-nine year old Vivian, recalling the events of the years that changed her whole world. ‘At some point in a woman’s life, she just gets tired of being ashamed all the time. After that, she is free to become whoever she truly is.’
If you’re a fan of the very popular Shopaholic series, Christmas Shopaholic is a must! I just finished reading the latest book from Sophie Kinsella and it was such a fun read. In a classic Becky Brandon (née Bloomwood) tale, Christmas is around the corner and Becky is getting ready to host everyone. She embarks on various shopping missions (and mishaps) to get all the festivities ready. From a vegan turkey to silver Llama ornaments to the perfect present for Luke, this is a delightful Christmas read about the chaos and comforts of the season.
One Day in December
A story of a chance meeting between Laurie and Jack ‘One day in December’ while out in London. It’s love at first sight, but fleeting. Time moves on and Laurie is always hoping she’ll run into him again. Finally they are reconnect but its years later, and Jack is dating Laurie’s best friend Sarah. The story follows the 10 year friendship, love and missed opportunities. A sweet tale, perfect to read over December.
