I could write pages about our time in Prague. It’s such a unique place, filled with rich history, beautiful buildings and lots of interesting quirks. We planned a long weekend getaway to the Czech Republic capital with our friends we were visiting in London, and I’m so happy we picked this charming town. The Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque era architecture, including the 9th century castle up on the hillside, makes you feel as though you have stepped back in time. Paired with delicious food, amazing culture and very cheap beer, Prague is a destination everyone should visit. It was raining softly when Jonathon and I made our way to the centre of Prague. We walked over the Charles Bridge into Old Town Square, which was almost completely empty. It was early on a Sunday, so the usual overcrowded Square was quiet and peaceful in the morning light. We wandered through the winding side streets taking photos of all the exquisite buildings. There is so much beauty in the design of this city. Prague was not rebuilt like most European cities during the 18th and 19th centuries, nor was it damaged during World War II. The medieval architecture and details remain in excellent condition
Prague is also a modern and energetic town, filled with a vibrant music and art scene. The mix of culture, history and creativity is incredible. Prague is such a cool city to experience, and even though we were only there a few days, our trip never felt rushed. It was easy to walk everywhere, and see all the sights. It’s the type of destination that can be a big tourist trap because it is so popular, but if you do your research, and understand more about the country, Prague will be a place that you’ll long to return to.
By the time people starting to arrive in Old Town Square for the day, the sun had come out. We walked back to our rented apartment a few block away, with coffee from the cafe below for our friends before heading out for brunch and more exploring. Prague was wonderfully surprising, and truly inspiring. And isn’t that the best part of travel?
