The beautiful and oh so stylish Anine Bing was in Vancouver last week to celebrate her collection being picked up at the prestigious department store, Holt Renfrew. With over 180,000 followers and counting, her blog ‘Anine’s World’ is one of the most influential social media accounts for fashion & style.
With many years of industry experience where she started out as a model – before launching her own collection 2 years ago; Anine is taking the fashion world by storm. We sat down with the Los Angeles-based designer to talk about her collection, her style and how she balances it all.
You started off in the industry as a model. How has your experience as a model and your work in the industry influenced the clothing you now design?
It was a really great experience. I was modeling for 15 years, travelling the world and learning everything about the industry from being in front of the camera. I learnt everything from how to set up a photo shoot, to styling, to how to fit a garment properly, to learning how to work with different people.
How did you begin designing?
It started about 5 years ago. I didn’t want to model forever and I’ve always been a very creative person. I got into music, collaborating with other designers, jewelry brands, kids lines and other companies. This was really well received. That’s when I first started to think about creating my own collection.
The Anine Bing collection began two years ago when I was trying to find the perfect pair of jeans. I had 10 pairs of jeans in my closet but I never found the pair that fit me perfectly. That started to wake up that little idea in my head.
Your collection is quite season-less.
Yes, exactly. I don’t do traditional seasons, we just keep adding in pieces to the collection. Of course, when it’s Fall, I do more knits and summer more dresses. I try to create clothes that float through the seasons. I come up with new designs all the time.
Everything in my collection goes together. I love black, white, grey, and army green. I want everything in the collection to be easy for my customer to pair together.
How do you approach designing your collection?
I always have myself in mind when I design. I design whatever I want in my closet. I trust myself in my designs – If I love it, the girls out there will love it too.
The girl I design for is someone who is comfortable with herself. She feels good in a pair of jeans, a t-shirt and to spice it up she’ll add a cool pair of boots. I design for the girl who is on the run, creative, travels, and who is comfortable in her own skin.
The fabrics and materials in your collection are really beautiful
My fabric choices are so important to me. The quality of the material I use in everything I design is important. The fabrics are very basic but luxurious. I work a lot in silk, linen and cashmere. We source all of our fabrics in Turkey.
Quite a few celebrities have been spotted wearing your clothes. Who were you most excited to see in your designs?
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. She’s the perfect Anine Bing girl. She has that model off duty style that I love.
If you could trade closets with anyone for a day, who would it be?
Kate Moss – I love her style. I love that relaxed, effortless style.
You’re also a singer. Can you tell us a bit about your band ‘Kill your Darlings.”
We started Kill your Darlings a little over 5 years ago. Music is like therapy to me. I love writing the music, singing, and creating it. The music is good for my soul but since I started my line I don’t have as much time to go out and promote it.
Does your musical style influence your design aesthetic?
Absolutely. It has a very similar vibe. I use my music in the videos we create for the line. They go very well together. It’s that mellow, easy vibe with a little bit of a rock and roll touch – just like the clothes.
How do you balance your busy career with being a mum?
It’s not always easy. It’s a lot of work. I love being a mom. I love being a designer. I’m so lucky to get to do what I love. It becomes a lifestyle, not just a job. I’m always busy but I love it. I don’t have a life outside of that, I’m either with my family or at work.
I love all of the jewelry you’re wearing. Can you tell us about your pieces?
Yes. Just like the quality of fabrics, I like to invest in a few key pieces of jewelry instead of having a bunch of pieces that you will throw out. I only work with the best materials. There’s no plating in my jewelry. So when my customers invest in my jewelry, they’ll have it forever. Quality is very important throughout the whole brand.
Holt Renfrew is hosting a pop up store of your designs. Can you tell us about your experience and collaboration with Holt Renfrew?I was so excited when I heard Holt Renfrew was picking up my brand. I’m so honoured to be hanging with so many other amazing designers like Helmut Lang and Isabel Marant. I’m super proud. Everyone at Holts has been lovely.
We’re heading into fall, what would you say is a staple every girl should have in her wardrobe?
The perfect pair of skinny jeans – in my design studios, I get everybody to try on my designs to ensure it works on many different body sizes. I love knits in the fall – I do a lot of over size knits in the collection. A pair of boots – I wear my Anine Bing studded gold boots all the time. Even if I’m just wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I feel like the boots make the outfit.
What advise would you give our readers who want to pursue a career in fashion design?
Have a strong vision. You need to know what your strengths are. It’s a lot of hard work, so be prepared for it to be your lifestyle. Social media is everything. Be well connected, and maintain your connections. When I was modelling, I met so many great people – photographers, stylist, art directors. When I started my collection, I knew a lot of people who were the best in the business.
What’s next for the Anine Bing collection?
So much! I keep on adding new things all the time! I’m opening my own store in LA this month. I’m so excited for that. It’s on 3rd Street, in a really great neighbourhood. There are lots of beautiful stores and restaurants. It’s the perfect location for my flagship store. I’ve had so much fun creating it. I want it to be like my world. I want my customer to feel comfortable, like they’re coming into my home.
Bali – It’s so far away from LA but I love it.
It’s such a peaceful place, but also so creative. There are so many incredible artists there.
It’s a beautiful place to find inspiration.
