Jay Godfrey showcased his collection for the second season during New York Fashion Week. The New York based designer’s dresses have caught the media’s attention with features in WWD, ELLE, Cosmopolitan and the New York Post. Godfrey’s designs have also captured a loyal celebrity following including Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and Olivia Palermo.
We chatted with Jay after his presentation to hear more about his beautiful, all white Spring 2016 collection.
Tell us about the inspiration for the Spring 2016 collection
I was obsessed with David Collins, the late interior designer and architect. While working on designing a hotel project in Seoul, Korea, I looked to Collins’ recently released coffee table book titled ABCDCS. – A book that memorialized the late designer’s work in hotels, restaurants, bars and private residences. And it was Collins’ use of different shades of white, ivory, alabaster and cream that heavily inspired Spring 16.
What are your favourite pieces in the collection?
I really love the pieces in stretch tweed the most – a culotte jumpsuit and a slip dress with exaggerated flounce. Theres a little hint of lurex there to give it a glam element and it’s a completely fresh way of utilizing tweed.
Who is the woman you have in mind when you’re designing the collection?
I don’t have one specific woman in mind but instead an idea of a strong, confident women who knows what she wants. She’s intellectual and sensual at once and loves clean, architectural style lines.
What is the most rewarding part about showcasing at Fashion Week?
The rest after the show is over!
What advice do you have for an aspiring fashion designer?
To become known for ONE thing before branching out into other categories.
What’s next for the Jay Godfrey Brand?
We have signed a bed/bath license so we expect to launch that collection in Fall 2016. We are also actively designing hotels across Asia!
