Kate Cutler and Tal Winter were close friends and young lawyers living in San Francisco. When they realized they were both carrying around trashy, disposable water bottles, they saw an opportunity to create something new.
A water bottle that was clean, clear, soft and beautiful. An accessory to be loved, not tossed away – a product they believed they could design. So they quit their jobs, and said yes to the adventure of being entrepreneur.
Four years later, bkr has gained a loyal following, earning its reputation as a coveted beauty essential and the solution to staying hydrated. We chatted with Kate and Tal about what makes bkr the ultimate water bottle, and why you will soon be obsessed too!
Tell us about the bkr concept?
bkr has become a beauty essential and is a skin care game changer. Water is the foundation of any beauty regimen. If you’re even 2% dehydrated it shows on your skin. But for many of us, drinking water was always a chore. bkr changes that—There’s some magic to the bkr that you won’t get from anything else. Our customers tell us they’re “addicted” “obsessed.” They tell us they bring their bkr everywhere and they’re drinking more water than ever before.
What inspired you to create bkr?
We always knew that the prescription for gorgeous skin is sleep and water but we found ourselves drinking from tons of plastic disposable water bottles. It didn’t make sense—we’re intelligent, sophisticated, cultured women—yet we were drinking out of trash. We couldn’t find a reusable bottle we loved so we decided to make exactly the bottle we wanted—something beautiful, effortless and chic.
What are some of the key design details that make bkr the perfect water bottle?
It’s some magical combination of things—the small mouth, the fact that it’s glass, the way it feels in your hand, the runway-inspired sleeves—but it’s more than that. Our customers have an emotional attachment to their little bottle. They tell us it’s changed their lives, it’s their favorite possession and they never knew how much they could love a water bottle—it’s pretty amazing. Because of this attachment our customers are drinking more water—they tell us their skin looks better and they feel better.
When did you realize your idea was going to be a big success?
There are lots of different moments that come to mind—the first time we saw a bkr in the hands of a celeb or seeing bkr in magazines—but really, from the beginning, we always believed bkr would be a success—we just knew that we wanted this cute little bottle and thought other people would too.
How do fashion trends inspire your color choices?
We watch runways in Paris, New York, London and Milan. For spring 2016, which launches this month, we were most inspired by Gucci, Saint Laurent and Céline. We look at what the season feels like to us—what’s happening in high fashion as well as what is happening in the world now—from art to street chic.
You have many celebrity fans. Who were you excited to see carrying bkr?
When we see celebs like Gisele Bündchen, Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Alba carrying around bkrs it’s pretty surreal and amazing but honestly it’s just as exciting when we see a chic woman we don’t know walking down the street bkr in hand.
What surprised you the most about creating the bkr products?
We weren’t prepared for how amazing our customers would be and the impact our little bottle would have. We have a cult following of diehard fans who are truly in love with their bkrs. They also tell us they haven’t bought a single plastic water bottle since owning their bkr which is really cool. And they tell us they’re finally drinking enough water—their skin looks better, their hair looks better and they feel better.
What advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur?
As an entrepreneur, it’s critical to determine where your product fits. To do that, you need to know your customer and really understand what core problem your product solves in their lives. Keep this vision as your focus and the big picture.
What can bkr fans look forward to seeing from you this Spring / Summer season?
