We met make up extraordinaire, Sarah Lucero backstage at New York Fashion Week last season. As the Global Executive Director of Creative Artistry for Stila Cosmestics, Sarah is responsible for creating makeup looks for many runway shows including Rebecca Minkoff, Betsey Johnson and Alice and Olivia.
In anticipation of the upcoming New York Fashion Week, we talked with Sarah about Stila’s new Fall collection and what shows she’s excited to work on this season.
Tell us about your work with Stila cosmetics
I’m the Global Executive Director of Creative Artistry for Stila Cosmetics. I’ve worked with Stila for 16 years now. I create all the makeup looks for Fashion Week and do the global beauty campaigns and all editorial shoots for Stila. I work with Stila artists all over the world and develop their artistry skills by training new artistry techniques. I work closely with all departments at Stila, as I am also the global spokesperson for the brand.
What items from Stila are you most excited about for Fall?
My favorite product for fall is our HUGE Extreme Lash Mascara! It’s the best mascara Stila has ever had in the line! I love it and wear it everyday. I’m also excited about the Got Inked Cushion Eye Liner in the metallic shades. The La Quill Precision Eye Liner Brush is essential with this product. Those would be my top three fall faves!
We love the new Stila packaging. Tell us about the new direction for Fall
The collection is called Modern Goddess. It’s all about luxury, modern textures, beautiful cinematic skin that has a lightweight feeling and soft finish. The products are packed with powerful pigments so you get the intense payoff in color without the heavy weight feeling on you skin and eyes! I feel that everyone will want to add some Stila into their makeup bags this fall!
When you don’t have a lot of time to do your make up, what’s your go-to look?
I always wear mascara and Convertible Color. It’s fast and looks like I made an effort! I love Stila’s HUGE Extreme Lash Mascara and Convertible Color in Camellia. I wear the cream blush on both cheeks and lips for a quick tint and sunny glow. I love tinted moisturizer or Illuminating Beauty Balm too. That’s pretty much it…on a daily basis for me. I don’t wear many products but I would never leave the house without these three beauty gems!
Stila always has delightful Holiday packages. Which one are you excited to gift this Holiday season?
I love the giftable Sending You Love Set and the Eternal Love Liquid Lipstick set! I’m so in love with the matte finish and intense power pout shades in this set! I will be gifting these two sets to every girl I know!! Beauty is always a great gift to all!! Even to yourself!
You’ve worked with many celebrities throughout your career. Who were you most excited to work with?
I love everyone I work with. I would have to say that I’m the most excited and grateful for the opportunity to work with Victoria Beckham and Annie Lennox. They are both so inspiring to me.
What beauty items do you never leave home without?
I never leave home without Stila Convertible Color in shades Peony, Camellia, and Poppy, HUGE Extreme Lash Mascara, and Frederic Malle Perfume in Portrait of a Lady, it’s my signature scent. I love Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream and Anastasia Brow Gel in Clear.
What runway shows are you most looking forward to working on this upcoming fashion week season?
I’m looking forward to all of the shows coming up! I get really inspired by anything and everything at fashion week: the people, backstage beauty, clothing, and the creative energy buzz all around the city! I love doing the makeup for Alice & Olivia, Betsey Johnson, and Rebecca Minkoff. They all have such an effortless, fun, and modern romantic vibe to me!! I’ve worked with many designers in the past and I always feel so fortunate and grateful for the opportunity to be a part of their shows! To me, it’s all about team work!
Way to relax and unwind
Outdoor hike in Los Angeles! I love being outdoors and in nature, that relaxes me.
Italy and Paris. Florence is my favorite, nothing compares to Sienna.
Place for a cocktail
The greatest hidden gem in my neighborhood called Little Dom’s that I love. Also, NOBU Malibu is beyond beautiful…sitting outside with friends, catching up over cocktails, and watching the sunset over the ocean makes for a perfect night and great place for a cocktail!

Hidden Gem in LA
My favorite hidden gem in LA is the Ken Paves Salon on Robertson Blvd. The outside garden is so relaxing and calming…plus, everyone who works there is so talented and kind! I love the positive energy there! It’s like my secret get-a-way even for an hour.
An express manicure & polish change is always a must!
