For his Fall 2015 collection, Jay Godfrey paid homage to his roots as a designer, mixing sharp tailoring with his feminine dresses.
We caught up with the designer backstage before he presented his collection for the first time at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.
Tell us about your collection inspiration
The collection was inspired by my love for Savile Row. The mood board inspirations looked to glamorous references like 1970s YSL, British tailoring mavericks like Tommy Nutter and Ozwald Boateng, and counter culture icons like Sex Pistols manager Malcolm Mclaren.
Our sexy, uptown, downtown girl is embracing tailoring as she did for us when we first started the brand. This is a full circle moment from when we started the company. Our focus originally was on tailoring, but we evolved into being more known for our dresses. Now, we’re bringing both elements together for Fall 2015.
What are your favourite pieces in the collection?
I love the tailored suit that we did in floral crepe. Thats what gets me excited. This is a strong, feminine collection. It features beautiful suitings, embellished tweeds, modern ultrasuedes, and metallic accented jerseys. I love this collection, it was really exciting to create.
What does it mean for you to be showcasing at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week?
I want to pinch myself! If you asked me 9 years ago when we started the brand if we’d be showcasing at the tents, I’d probably say that’s a long shot. But, here we are!
What’s next for the Jay Godfrey brand?
I believe my brand growth is going to come in the world of interior design. We have designed a few hotel interiors in Asia, and this is something we will continue doing. We have a couple more projects in Seoul Korea and Bangkok. We currently have a deal to do a bedding and bath collection. I’m excited to see where this new venture will take my brand to.
