Fall fashion is a favourite for many because there are so many options! Coats, jackets, boots and scarves; this is the perfect time of year to re-evaluate your wardrobe. I love this process. Unpacking favourites I’ve collected over the years and looking at my closet to see what I’m missing.
I also love re-watching the runway collections and making a list of the key trends for the season. I teach a class on fashion styling, so I spend a lot of time looking at the stories for the season, and discussing them with my students. There are quite a few traditional details in style at the moment – the idea of creating the ideal capsule collection and buying classic pieces as your wardrobe foundation. There are also lots of fun trends like the teddybear coat and all the 80’s influence. I’ve rounded up what I’m excited to wear this season, along with some key trends you should check out for Fall 2018 / 2019.
The Teddy Bear Jacket
Cozy, teddybear jackets and coats are popping up everywhere! I love this trend. It’s perfect to wear on a crisp fall day, and into the Holiday season. Since this is faux fur, and a trend driven style, I’d suggest finding a cheap and cheerful version. This one is by Kendall & Kylie from Ardene. It’s a great fit, and oh so cozy to wear. We snapped these photos in Whistler, an ideal location to rock a teddy bear jacket.
This is one of the biggest trend stories for Fall 2018 / 2019. Think wider shoulders, bright pops of colour, dad sneakers, big ear rings and bow details. This trend can feel a bit overwhelming, and silly, so find your own way to embrace it. For me, it’s gold hoop earrings and a strong shoulder blazer. Think Melanie Griffiths in Working Girl (If you haven’t seen this movie, it’s a MUST!)
The Fanny Pack
This is a very trendy accessory at the moment, and honestly it is SO useful! When I’m on the go, especially while travelling, a fanny pack is ideal. There are lots of cute versions on the market that are very inexpensive. I got this one from Indigo when I went to San Francisco, and have ended up using it a lot more than I thought. I have my eye on this tweed version from Zara for my next trip.
This was a big runway and street style trend last season and we’re seeing many shoe designers adopt it. It still feels fresh, and it’s a nice departure from the pair of black boots you already have in your closet. I picked up these Kenneth Cole boots from Winners. It has a black sole which makes the white boot more practical. This version has Western vibe, another key trend we’re seeing for Fall 2018 / 2019.
Denim is always on trend. It’s a classic. There will always be trends within the denim category. This season we’re seeing a return to a cleaner silhouette, with more of a straight cut leg and relaxed fit. If you want something different from your blue or black jeans, try grey denim. I love the slightly high waisted Tess cut from Mavi. I’ve been wearing these non stop. The stretch fabric makes them super comfy.
The Camel Coat
If you’re looking for a classic wool coat, camel is the perfect shade to wear this winter. There are many versions of this in the market, but it’s all about finding the right shade for your skin tone. I have a fair, rosy complexion, so I need a colour on the paler side. This will be a coat you will have in your wardrobe for a while, so be sure to find the perfect cut and colour for you.
After so many seasons of pastel shades being the colour of the moment, the return to brights is refreshing. Magenta pink was a key colour on the runways for Fall. It’s such a pretty shade on so many skin tones, and easy to incorporate with other colours.
Prairie dresses, plaids and fringe and lace details are everywhere . Designers were loving the western influence on the Fall 2018 runways. It’s part bohemian, part victorian vibes. You don’t have to take this trend too literally. You don’t have to rock a bolo tie – although on the right outfit, it could be fabulous!
Tweeds and Plaids
Traditional menswear print, Prince of Wales check was popular last season, and the trend has grown stronger. A variety of plaids in tweeds and printed fabrics in many different colours are in the collections. You can go very traditional with this look with a classic black and white tweed, or something bright like the ‘Clueless’ yellow plaid. I have my eye out for a tweed jacket, and plaid wool Aline Skirt.
There was so many different animal prints on the runway! You probably have a piece of leopard print in your wardrobe. Some even think of it as a classic. This season there was such a variety of animal print; giraffe, tortoise, tiger, zebra and python all in a variety of colours. A pop of animal print can add some spice to a neutral outfit. Not into rocking a full leopard print coat? Try an animal print accessory like a scarf or purse.
Sparkle and Shine
Silver, metallic, oil spill and other reflective shades are popping up everywhere. From boots, to jackets to foil fabrics and sequin details, this upbeat trend will be perfect to embrace leading up to the Holiday season.
